Integrated Evaluation and Optimisation of Geothermal Energy Development at the Kibiro Geothermal Prospect, Western Uganda

Summary

Uganda possesses significant geothermal resources that could contribute to electricity generation, industrial heat supply, and energy diversification. However, the development of these resources remains constrained by limited site-specific subsurface characterization and high cost of conventional geothermal exploration. This project establishes a novel approach of extracting geothermal energy from the Kibiro geothermal prospect in Western Uganda, integrating field observations, low-cost experimental techniques, geochemical analysis, thermodynamic assessment, and numerical reservoir modeling. The study is expected to identify optimal conditions for geothermal heat extraction, suitable production and reinjection strategies, and opportunities for direct-use applications like agro-processing, drying, aquaculture, greenhouse heating, and other productive uses.
