Development of Locally Adapted Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Technologies for Uganda’s Petroleum Sector: A Kingfisher Case Study
Summary
Uganda's emerging oil and gas industry presents an important opportunity to develop carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies that are adapted to local conditions. The pilot project focues on locally customized CCUS framework for the kingfisher central processing facility (KCPF) in the Albertine Graben, with emphasis on the capture of CO2 from major stationary emission sources and its subsequent utilization and storage. The project will utilize locally available and low-cost materials for CO2 capture, including a hybrid of Uganda-derived agricultural residues like banana peels, maize cobs, rice husks, and other biomass wastes. These materials will be converted into activated biochar and other porous adsorbents through controlled thermal and chemical activation and experimentally characterized for CO2 adsorption capacity, selectivity, regeneration potential and stability under conditions representative of the KCPF. The research will therefore provide experimentally validated and simulation-supported evidence for reducing emissions from the KCPF while simultaneously converting agricultural and industrial wastes into useful carbon-management resources.
