An IoT-Enabled Modular Biogas and Biofertilizer Production System from Agricultural and Organic Waste in Southwestern Uganda

Summary

Large quantities of agricultural, livestock, and food wastes in Southwestern Uganda remain poorly utilized, contributing to environmental pollution while households and institutions continue to depend heavily on unsustainable traditional biomass fuels. This project will develop a smart modular biodigester and biogas purification system for converting locally available organic wastes into clean biogas and nutrient-rich biofertilizer. Integrated low-cost sensors and IoT monitoring will track temperature, pH, gas production, and system performance to optimize feedstock utilization and energy recovery. The resulting smart waste-to-energy prototype will offer a scalable solution for clean cooking, waste management, and sustainable agriculture in farms, schools, institutions, and rural enterprises. It supports Uganda’s energy transition, circular bioeconomy and NDP IV, advances SDGs 2, 7, 12 and 13, and aligns with FAST and MUST priorities in bioenergy, sustainable agriculture, circular resource utilization and community-focused innovation.
